Each year 26 May is the opportunity for the nation to pause, reflect and take-stock on where we are with truly acknowledging and responding to the trauma, pain and grief Stolen Generations survivors have endured, and continue to endure as a result of being removed and separated from family and community, and mistreated as children by governments and institutions.
The true origin of National Sorry Day is the day in 1997 that the Bringing Them Home Report was tabled in the Australian Parliament. This Report documented the testimonies of witnesses – of survivors – of removal and the impact and extent of the devastation to individuals, families and communities as a result of that separation.
Throughout May, The Healing Foundation will be drawing attention to the #unfinishedbusiness of the #bringingthemhome report and the pressing contemporary needs of Stolen Generations survivors.
